Reggie
While my trip to Yellowstone didn't end up with the shots of wolves I was hoping for, I don't think I would have ever expected to get a daily opportunity to observe this massive grizzly bear. Our sightings of him became so routine, we named him "Reggie". Reggie had a pretty sweet winter set up for a bear. He spent most of his day in a protected area of the hillside overlooking a valley with a few ponds below him.
These ponds freeze during the deep winter of Yellowstone and the numerous bison in the park then walk across the ice without concern. At some unlucky moment for the bison, the ice thaws enough for them to fall through with little hope of escaping the cold water. Nature is unforgiving at times, but always efficient and in this pattern Reggie stocks his freezer full of bison each winter.
He has a well worn trail down from his hillside directly to the pond where he feasts on the winter-killed bison. He might be the most well fed bears I have ever seen. Each day we watched him eat his fill, using his massive claws and powerful jaws to pull the bison out of the water. After he was done, he would slowly make his way back home, pausing to take a break or a nap with a belly full of bison.
